Library Mission: Mission and Fundamental Commitments

Library Mission

The Hofheimer Library supports the Virginia Wesleyan University community by providing services, resources, and facilities that advance the academic program.  Through engaged teaching, the library helps students develop critical thinking skills that foster lifelong learning.  In partnering with classroom faculty, librarians are innovative and active participants in course and assignment design. The library is a dynamic center for learning, discovery, and creation of knowledge, as well as a virtual space that provides 24/7 access to web-based resources and services to enhance teaching and learning. Fundamental Commitments

  • We are committed to VWU’s pledge to provide service that is “friendly and considerate, prompt and efficient, clear and flexible.”  We are courteous and helpful to our patrons and focus on their needs.
  • We engage the liberal arts.
  • We strategically leverage the latest technologies to support efficient workflows and advanced capabilities of providing access to library resources and instructional training.
  • We build collections that meet the demands of the curriculum.
  • We communicate what’s happening at the library to our campus community.
  • We respond flexibly as we adapt to the changing needs of our campus.
  • We learn together as a team and as individuals.
  • In addition to providing spaces and collections that support academic work, we design spaces that support social interaction and develop collections that support leisure reading.
  • We participate in cooperative programs across libraries that support our faculty and students as well as those at other institutions.
  • We develop work study experiences that intentionally help students develop a variety of transferrable job skills.
  • We provide the necessary information, instruction and tools for students and faculty for their learning and research.
  • We participate in and contribute to activities and service within the VWU community.
