Understanding an Assignment

Students need to have a clear understanding of the expectations and requirements of college assignments; new types of assignments may be confusing to students.

What Students should look for in assignments, either in syllabus or in assignment description.

  • Choice of topic:  does the topic require approval by the instructor?

  • Paper length

  • Expected number AND type of sources or references student is expected to use/consult

  • Format style required for paper and bibliography.

  • Assignment deadlines: assignment may be due at end of semester or instructor may require that sections of the assignment are turned in throughout the semester.

Making the Most of the People in the Library Who Are Here to Help

Students can expect tremendous help from the people who work at the library. From finding a book to borrowing a video camera to extensive research help, there are people here to support the students.

This workshop will empower students to effectively utilize the help that library staff can offer. Students will leave with an understanding of how to prepare for a research consultation with a librarian.

A "Novel" Approach to Academic Reading

Discovering books requires more than just looking at titles or required reading lists. In this session, we will look at the parts of books, types of books and different ways that information can be presented.  Lesiure reading materials in the collection will also be emphasized, as well as the book that influence us.

Using books for research does not mean reading the entire book.  How much of a book is used in a project depends on what information it contains.  Reading through the book description, looking over the Table of Contents for relevant chapters, and using the Index make efficient use of time.  How do bibliographies and foot/end notes lead to further sources?  You may find a book that is not about your topic, but it may contain useful information.

Students will leave this session with a better understanding of how to efficiently and effectively search for and use books.
