The Smithsonian acquired Folkways from the Asch estate in 1987, and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings has continued the Folkways commitment to cultural diversity, education, increased understanding, and lively engagement with the world of sound.

The aim is to build a database of melodies that can be searched by playing them on a virtual keyboard, "drawing" notes by clicking and dragging on a grid, singing or whistling into a microphone, tapping the rhythm on the computer keyboard, or entering a "contour search" using a code to indicate whether the melody moves up, moves down, or repeats a note.

Developed by the Library of Congress, with assets provided by Sony Music Entertainment, the National Jukebox offers free online access to a vast selection of music and spoken-word recordings produced in the U.S. between the years 1901 and 1925.
