What are journals?

Journals are similar to magazines - they are published regularly and may be available in print or online. Journal characteristics include:

* Intended for individuals in a specific field of study. Readers are assumed to have some knowledge in the field.
* Articles report research and case studies.
* Layout is usually just text, few photos, lengthy articles
* Articles are peer-reviewed; an editorial board reviews each article for accuracy and quality.
* Articles are written by scholars in a particular field.
* Articles contain extensive footnotes and bibliographies of sources.
* Usually published by professional or academic organizations.
